- Interview with Stephen Platt, conducted and filmed by Anne Marie Hamilton-Brehm at Paseo Verde Library in Henderson, Nevada, May 19, 2015. As manager of Green Valley Library, Platt directs Henderson Libraries’ Generation STEAM workshop series, which is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Platt shares how he became interested in technology and partnered with the non-profit SYN Shop: The Las Vegas Hackerspace to offer a series of free public STEAM education programs for all ages. Recalling memories of the workshops, he emphasizes what participants gain in terms of inspiration and confidence from hands-on learning and explains the importance of encouraging creativity and exploration. Platt reveals how the instructors worked together to develop and teach the workshops. He concludes with a story illustrating the practical application of technical knowledge in everyday life.
