520 3    |a Interview with Stan Hanel, conducted and filmed by Anne Marie Hamilton-Brehm at Paseo Verde Library in Henderson, Nevada, April 4, 2015. Hanel teaches the Basic Electronics workshop in Henderson Libraries’ Generation STEAM workshop series. After serving in the U.S. Army, Hanel studied accounting at UC Berkeley before pursuing a career in electronics. In 1979, he began working in a factory in Silicon Valley making particle counters that measured dust in filtered clean rooms used for constructing electronic integrated circuits. Hanel studied business management in junior college. As a volunteer at Stanford University research programs, he worked on adaptive technologies for war veterans at the Spinal Cord Injury Unit of the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital. Later he worked as the production manager for Words Plus, Inc., helping develop the adaptive communication tools that enabled Professor Stephen Hawking and others with Lou Gehrig’s disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), to speak and communicate. After working on developing a CyberGlove and other virtual reality systems for a company that was bought out during the dot com bubble, Hanel moved to Las Vegas. As part of Generation STEAM and through involvement with a number of technological initiatives, he seeks to foster the energetic and collaborative innovation environment he enjoyed in Silicon Valley. Hanel shares engaging stories about the early days of Silicon Valley and adaptive technology development, promoting self-education, discovery, and learning by doing.
