Summary:
James Edward Smalley, Jr.’s parents moved to Henderson soon after he was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1945. After graduating from Basic High School, Smalley served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hancock before attending Western Oregon College to become a teacher. Following his career as a middle school English and Social Studies teacher in Oregon and Nevada for over thirty years, he continues substituting in retirement. Smalley shares a number of his experiences growing up in early Henderson, detailing activities that longtime Henderson residents will recall fondly, and pays tribute to his close friend Mark Ortiz.
