Summary:
Oral history of Traian “Tom” Matye, conducted and filmed by Anne Marie Hamilton-Brehm with Fredric W. Watson at Paseo Verde Library in Henderson, Nevada, October 27, 2015. Matye shares his memories of his experiences flying more than seventy-five missions in the P-47 Thunderbolt with the 358th Fighter Group. During World War II, Matye performed ground attack missions in support of Patton’s army in France, dodging German flak and fighters, and operating from primitive forward airfields. After the war, he flew P-39 Bell Airacobras and P-38 Lightnings while training fighter pilots. Following his military service, he directed and managed Computer Systems for Hughes Aircraft Company and Xerox. During his interview, he describes how he became a fighter pilot and talks about his book, Prop Wash: A Fighter Pilot’s Hazy Recollections of WWII.
