When he finally received his draft notice, he made it known that he wanted to train for the ski troops. Arthur was accepted and trained with the 10th Mountain Division (later to become the 10th Light Division). He suffered a sun stroke while training at Camp Swift in Texas and was left behind when his troops were sent to Italy.
