Scott News Staff Writer Seven students froip Thurman White Middle School suffered minor injuries when their school bus banged into two cars while taking the children to school Monday morning. A Clark County School District bus driver was cited for failure to pay full time and attention for the accident, which occurred shortly before 8 a.m. At least one adult was also injured, but funhcrinformation was unavailable at News press time Monday. All three Henderson Fire Department ambulances and two Mercy ambulances transported victims to St. Rose Dominican Hospital following the accident. Police said the school bus was castbound on Sunset Road in front of the Eigcr Ridge apartment complex when the bus banged into the rear of two cars that had vbcen stopped for another school bus. "The bus had just folded its stop signs and started moving out," HPD Sgt. Richard Perkins said. "The cars had just started to move when the other bus [rammed them]." The bus hit a Porsche, pushing it into a Thunderbind, Perkins .said. The students* injuries appeared to be "whiplash-type complaints," said CCSD Public Information Officer Ray Willis during a telephone interview from the emergency room at St. Rose. Photo by KaUwrinc E. ScoM By Katherine E. Scott A'tfH'j Staff Writer City officials planned to shut down a sexullay oriented video and novelty store on Boulder Highway Monday afternoon after a federal judge lifted a stay that had kept the establishment open since early 1990. Owners of Fantasy Video Plus, now operating under the name Pure Pleasure, filed the lawsuit on April 24, 1990, claiming the city was violating theirConsiitutional rights of free speech. Deputy City Attorney Liza Conroy said Monday that the order issued last week by U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd George supports the city's position that "this is a local zoning and planni ng and business license issue." Attorneys for the fimi's parent company, Nevada Entcrtairuncnt Industries Inc. and its president Daniel Bishop, did not return calls by News press time Monday. A spokesman at the firm's main office in Las Vegas said they had no comment on the order. Fantasy Video Plus opened at 1 lOON. Boulder Highway on Feb. 1, 1990. On Feb. 9, company officials were served with papers seeking to revoke its business license. The license was revoked on April 10,1990, following four hours of testimony before the Henderson City Council. City officials claimed the business was opened with fraudulent information listed on the liceasing application. That information inDetention basin before planners eluded omission that the merchandise to be sold and rented would be sexually oriented and absence of information that one of the owners had an arrest record. The case briefly entered the realm of the U.S. Supreme Court, which in eariy 1991 declined to hear whether the U.S. District Court was the proper jurisdiction for the case. Judge George's order of judgment in favor of the city of Henderson was filed Wednesday and entered on Friday, a docket clerk said Monday. She said the order also lifted the preliminary injunction which prevented the city from enforcing its licensing laws. Conroy said she assumes the finn will appeal the decision, but said they would have to "request another [injunction] in order to stay open while their appeal is being decided." Fantasy Video recently changed its name to Pure Pleasure, but the city licensing department said it had no information about the business because of the injimction. A spokesman for the licensing department said they learned unofficially that another person had been added to the parent company, but said, "They're o per a tin g over there under no rules at all. We can't do anything." Conroy said Monday that the city had obtained a copy of the order and was planning to serve papers to shut down the store after News press time. ByRoyTheiss ^ News Staff Writer An architectural review and use permit for a new detention basin in the Mission Hills neighborhood will be considered by the Henderson Plaiuiing Commission at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Council Chambers 240 Water St. The basin is proposed to be built in an RR (rural residential) district on San Juan Capistrano Avenue. The commissioners will also hear a zoning ordinance amendment request to allow limited rentals in Certain commercial districts. Numerous residents complained to the comm issioners at the Nov. 5 planning meeting that the noise from the machines would disturb their tranquility. Ahem Renter Center is requesting a zone change from PS (public and semi-public) district to CN (neighborhood commcrcial)district in the Whiuicy Ranch neighborhood. Ahem Renter Center is also requesting a use permit to allow vehicle and equipment sales and rentals to be conducted at the site at 1601 W. Scott yv^wj Staff Writer A 37-year-old man Henderson charged with randomly murdering a gambler at a local casino in October had his preliminary hearing conditionally waived Monday and was bound over to Qark County District Court for psychiatric treatment, a Justice Court spokeswoman said Monday. Stephen Knapp was given a Dec. 22 date before District Court Judge Thomas Foley, who is expected to determine where he will go for treatment. "He has to be mentally competent to stand trial, and as of now, he can't," the spokeswoman said. She said he is cunrently being held in the Gark County Detention Center. Knapp was arrested at the Skyline Casino on Oct. 5 after witnesses said he shot a man who was playing a poker slot machine near the back door of the casino. Joseph Ronald Ciaffone, 47. died two days later at University Medical Center. He had been here from Michigan visiting relatives, police said. Witnesses told investigators that after he entered the back door of the Skyline, Knapp looked around for a moment, then took a revolver from its holster and shot the nearest gambler at close range. He then returned the gun to its place and left out the same door. He was taken into custody by Skyline security guards after a struggle with Ciaffone's brotherin-law, William Hombrook, who chased after him. Hombrook wrested a Taunis .38 caliber revolver from Knapp when the guiunan began to draw it again, police said. By Roy Thei-ss News Staff Writer At least five new casinos aa" planned in Henderson. Some casinos still need to acquire financing, while others are under construction. At 139,000squarcfect, Wally's Wagon wheel Hotel and Casino, is the largest casino slated to he built, tut is having a tough time getting financial backing. Walter Weiss, president of Magna Leisure Corp., said his biggest problem is the start-up cost. Banks are not giving loans to people who do not have existing casino operations. Weiss said. He may have to look for someone with gaming history in order to secure the loan, he added. Weiss said he has more than 50% equity but he still cannoi obtain a loan. "In normal times, you could get a loan with less than 40% equity." Wally's Wagonwheel Hotel and Casino is located 2200 S. Boulder Highway, just north of the Old Vegas fort. The three-story building is scheduled to have 200 rooms, two restaurants, a large bingo parior and a theater lounge for Country and Westem talent to be showcased. It will employ approximately 600 people. Weiss said the philosophy for the casino is to have great food at moderate prices with exciting entertainment. "It's going to be a warm and friendly place." If Weiss' dream becomes a reality, he will be the first casino employee since Wilbur Qark, a wheel dealer in 1950, to open a casino. Groundbreaking is scheduled forMay, Weiss said, and he hopes to have the project open in June 1994. The Triple "J" Bingo Parlor has been under construction for two months. Located behind the new Kmart at 725 S. Raceu^ck Road, Triple "J" is scheduled to open in March 1993. The Triple "J" will be a high stakes bingo parlor and will employ approximately 100people.lt measures 35,000 square feet on eight acres. The Roadhouse Casino and Diner, to be located at the Information Center on Boulder Highway, will havea 1920s-50s theme. The casino will be adomed with antiques, an decor and classic can. The casino is scheduled to be FLAPJACKS—Flapjack Reds Casino on Sunset Road is one of five casinos recently approved for construction. Photo by AITM Mjm built in two stages. Groundbreaking may occur between 60 to 90 days and the applicant. Bob McMackin, said he hopes to have the first phase of the casino open by July. The first phase will encompass 14,000 square feet and house two restaurants. The second phase will include a micro-brewery and a restaurant, McMackin said. The brewery will make numerous home-made beers. McMackin said he hopes to have it in operation one year after the first phase of the project is open. McNamee's Mining Co. Casino, located in the Henderson Plaza at 642 S. Boulder Highway, is sclieduled to have a bowling center. The applicant is renovating the existing4,600-square-foot facility. Flapjack Reds Casino is starting to seesome headway. The walls are up and the roofing has been worked on. Located at 333 W. Sunset Road, it was originally designed u the Country Kitchen. By Terry Carter News Sports Editor After a 2-16 season, not too many basketball experts would predict the Basic giris to be a playoff threat. And apparently the Lady Wolves' head coach Jan Van Tuyl likes that image. But in the background, he and and his varsity of 12 talented veterans are ready to surprise the so-called experts with brains and hard work. How much of a surprise remains to, be seen, but Basic's varsity girls are likely to be a .500 or better club this season. "I want to see daily improvement, and I thin^ a .500 season is within our reach," he added. "Our strength will be patience and intelligence. I've got four or five straight A students." The first daily indication of the Lady Wolves' progress arrives at 5:30 every morning at the Basic gym. Before organized basketball practices were permitted in midNovember, Van Tuyl opened the gym at 5:30 a.m. before school. His varsity filed in voluntarily to work on their skills. For the past three weeks, the coach, has continued the 5:30 workout, in addition to the typical afternoon training. Van Tuyl said he has not had a varsity player miss a morning practice yet. "Our practices are hard enough that the games will be relaxation," he commented during a recent running drill. "Everybody will earn playing time for us." Beyond the extra conditioning and time to develop their shooting touch, the Lady Wolves also return several talented players, several tall newcomers and one Norway standout Xady^WoIvesTine-up Seniors Christine Arroyo, a 5foot-10 post, and 5-6 guard Kristi Thompson arc among Basic's returning starters. One of the hardest workers on an aggressive team, Arroyo has developed her quickness and inside moves over the summer, as well as a reliable hook shot. Norway exchange student and 5-6 senior Linda Bjomsen is an all-around find for Van Tuyl. A skilled ballhandler, Bjomsen joined the team in September, and her skills arc likely to enhance an already solid squad. Junior Jenifer Ebert is one of Basic's best guards and posts at 510. In fact Van Tuyl stresses the all-around skills to each of his players. He expects his enti re team to be af^to rotate to any position and handle it well. The coach also said all but one of his varsity dozen can shoot from 3-point country comfortably. Tall sophomores Jennifer Ullrich at 5-10 and Andrca Wise at 6-0 are the team's best outside threats, he added. "We're going to use a motion offense, but I don't expect most of our scoring to come from the post. Our kids are not afraid to shoot, and we have some shooters on this team," he explained. "We're ETERNAL CONDITIONING—Basic talent Jenifer Ebert hustles through a conditioning drill for basketball season, which begins at Gorman today for the Lady Wolves. Ebert is one of several standouts for Basic this season. Photo by Airon Mijes not afraid to take the three, but it won't be our bread and butter." Youth on their side A young, building program, Basic has four sophomores and five juniors built into the varsity line-up. Among the younger standouts are 5-7 junior Rosie Arroyo, a swift guard, 5-9 junior guard Jennifer Martindale and sophomores Ullrich and Wise. At 6-0 and with unlimited potential. Wise may be a future post standout for the Lady Wolves. Defensively Basic is versed on various presses, but Van Tuyl said his team will generally use a 2-3 zone. Offensively the Lady Wolves have worked hard on numerous strategies, including pick and back-door situations. With a team goal of taking ihe' academic state championship, BasiQ opens its campaign ai BishopGonnantodayat4;30p.m. The Lady Wolves' B-team opens with a 3 p.m. game, and the JV will close the games with a 6 p.m. jump ball. ft Basketball scrimmage results Wolves' defense solid UP AND IN—Basic senior guard Charles Edwards lays In a shot during a recent basketball practice. The Wolves open their season today at home at 3 p.m. • P hoto by AiroB Mayw By Terry Carter News Sports Editor In a perfoimance similar to last season, Basic struggled offensively in a Friday scrimmage at Chaparral. But the Wolves' defense kept the Cowboys at bay. Playing six 10-minute quarters, Basic prepared for today's season opener with an even batUe. The majority of the Wolves' points came off an uptempo fast break, triggered by 6-foot-5 rebound specialist Chris Wilson, Basic varsity basketball coach Rich Whitehead said. "We'rc looking a little better on the fast break. That's where we got most of our points. But our halfcoun game was poor—Matt [Meisncr] was probably our leading scorer," Whitehead added. Basic opened the scrimmage with four seniors—Charles Ed waids,Mario Ramirez, Meisner and Wilson—working with junior outside shooter Billy Boyle. With 15 players on varsity, the Wolves sport a strong perimeter shooting junior squad and a taller senior class that likes to take the basketball inside. Junior Robert Brissendine led the younger Wolves in 3-point shoodng. Once the Wolves find die right combination of juniors and seniors on the court, the coach expects a more productive offense. "If we run the floor the way we'd like to, we should have good balanced scoring. Our seniors are a little better inside, and our jimiors arc a little better outside," he commented. Defensively both teams were victimized by iheiropponcnt's fast break. Basic gave up numerous points to Chaparral on breakaway situations, but Whitehead said he was pleased with his team's halfcourt defense. Defensive standouts included the four starting seniors primarily. Basic opens its season today at 3 p.m. at home against Bishop Gonnan, which boasts the tallest front line in the city. Wrestlers strong at middle weights State qualifiers Smiley, Spielberg return for Wolves By Terry Carter News Sports Editor Basic returns only two experienced, varsity wrestlers to the mat this winter. Fortimately both were state qualifiers in Reno last season. Senior Shane Smiley was the Southern Zone champion and state runner-up at 160 pounds. He and junior 130-pounder Bill Spielberg, who placed fourth in zone, represent all of the Wolves varsity returning talent, Basic wrestling coach Jim Duschen said. But the Wolves will not be defenseless, at least fiom 130 pounds up. The strength of Basic's lineup will be between 145 and 160 pounds, and the Wolves will also featurc talent in the heavier weight classes. "From 103 to B5 pounds, I've only got one kid in the room who was herc last year. To begin with, we're going to be really young and inexperienced, especially in the lighter weights," Duschen added. With approximately 45 wrestlers practicing now, Duschen will have strength at 145 pounds with senior Dusty Santano and junior Scott Nelson, who had an outstanding JV season. Nelson may grapple at 145 or 152 pounds. Oklahoma transfer Jeremy Boucher is expected to be a solid wrestler at 152, along with Shawn Kiikpatrick. At 171 pounds, seniors Curt Hafen and Russell Lamb will be competitive. Unbeaten as a JV wrestler, sophomore Jim Petrie may be a rising star for the Wolves at 189 pounds. Duschen said he will do well this season, despite his youth because eariy experience ami solid skills. JuniM-Mike Beardall will round out the line-up in the heavyweight class. New talents for Basic include 130-pound Louis Hawkins, who won his weight category in the Newcomer's Takedown Tounicy held at Western High School recently. He and 112-pound Chad Evans will be a leading force in the lighter weights forthe Wolves. With I similar start in 1991. A 21 -8 team last season. Goraian will be led by 6-8 cemer Jojo Roundy. Basic's varsity wrestlers eventually posted a 5-3 reconl in Conference dual meets, finished third in the Southern Zone meet and fifth at State in Reno. The trees, usually Mondale Pines, can be purchased from any local nursery and can survive in the house if taken carcof properly. Afterward, the trees can thrive in the city paries. Benefits from buying live trees include no loss of energy from cutting trees, and when planted outside, trees go a long way to ward cooling and cleaning the air. Scott ATgifj Staff Writer Fantasy Video Plus, operating on Boulder Highway recently under the name Pure Pleasure, closed its doors for business Monday after Henderson officials enforced a two-year-old revocationofthe firm'sbusinesslicense. "We are asking the court to stay the closure pending the appeal," said Neil Beller, attorney for the finn's parent company Nevada Entertainment Inc., which filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court after the Henderson Qty Council revoked the business license in April 1990. Bcller said the request for a stay, or preliminary injunction, would be filed by this morning in the courtroom of Judge Lloyd George. Last week George lifted a previous temporary injunction after finding in favor of the defendant, the city of Henderson. The lawsuit claimed the city's effort to close the business was a violation of Constitutional rights of freedom of speech. George found in favor of the city, which maintains the license was revoked due to fraudulent information in the license application. City Licensing Inspector Leonard Lang and Deputy City Attorney Liza Conroy, accompanied by officers of the Henderson Police Department, entered the business at 1:10 p.m. Monday and informed the clerk to shut its doors because it was operating without a business Iiccn.se. Conroy informed a company official over the telephone that they were allowing the clerk a little more than an hour — until 2:30 p.m. — to close down. She said later Monday that an attorney came to check the city's ordinance before the shop v/as closed. "They wanted to have somebody there to receive video rentals coming back [and for security reasons)," Conroy said. She said an employee may remain on the premises, but "they cannot have people walking in and out of there. It is closed." Bcller said George's decision will be appealed to the Ninth Circuit. In the meantime, he said they will attempt to obtain a court order to allow the store to reopen. 'The court can grant a stay, in our opinion, from the city enforcing the law," Beller said. He agreed that the city had already enforced the law, adding, "What we're asking is a stay from what the city already has done [and allowing for] reopening the business." The trial is being held before Judge Jeffrey Sobel in Clark County District Court Dept. 5.
